A nurse at Northside Hospital Gwinnett named Kim Still went above and beyond her job to make sure that Jax, a dying patient’s beloved chihuahua, found a loving home. The old cancer patient, who didn’t have any children and wasn’t close to her family, was worried about what would happen to Jax.
The patient gave Kim care for Jax as her time came to an end. But Kim’s family told her to take Jax to a shelter. Kim did something very brave when she thought about euthanasia: she adopted Jax herself.
The patient felt better because of Kim’s kindness, and she died quietly knowing that Jax was in good hands. This amazing action shows how deeply nurses care about their patients.
“I never anticipated the connection I’d make with some patients,” Kim told me. “Jax has brought immense joy; he’s charming and loving.”
Kim won the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses because she didn’t care about herself. Her deeds show how compassion and kindness can change things for the better, giving people around her hope.
Kim takes great care of Jax and gives him lots of love and attention. This lovely story shows how strong people can be and how love and kindness can get us through even the hardest times.
